(NC)-Nine out of 10 Canadian parents recognize breakfast as an important part of their child’s development - not only for the health benefits it provides, but also the increased mental performance and emotional state. However, a shocking 66 per cent of parents say their children are not eating breakfast every morning.*
Studies confirm that children who do not eat a healthy breakfast may be at a disadvantage in comparison to their breakfast eating peers. Yet, 31 per cent of elementary school and 62 per cent of secondary school students in Canada do not eat a healthy breakfast daily. It is statistically proven that children who eat a healthy breakfast daily, perform better in school.
To address the importance of child and adolescent nutrition, Nutella, in support of Canadian non-profit organization, Breakfast for Learning, is challenging Canadians with The Better Breakfast Challenge. Nutella is committed to educating Canadians on the necessity of breakfast for all children, to ensure they have the energy to think and do. This is a national challenge put out to parents to encourage their children to take part in a 21-day, habit-forming commitment of eating a nutritious breakfast every morning (the number of days it statistically takes to form a habit).
You can join the Challenge by visiting www.nutellabreakfastchallenge.ca. For each person that participates, Nutella will donate $1 directly to Breakfast for Learning. A donation of a dollar will buy a Canadian child a nutritious breakfast such as a hard-boiled egg, a slice of whole-wheat toast and a piece of fruit.
The Better Breakfast Challenge website is also a great resource for nutrition information, recipes and tips to making breakfast more fun.
Breakfast for Learning is the leading, national non-profit organization solely dedicated to child nutrition programs in Canada.
*Canadian breakfast statistics are the result of a poll conducted on behalf of Nutella from March 31 - April 3, 2009. This online survey of 1754 Canadian parents with children still in the household was conducted via the Ipsos I-Say Online Panel, Ipsos Reid’s national online panel.
