Durham District School Board Appoints Two Superintendents
June 26, 2009 — The Durham District School Board (DDSB) is pleased to announce the appointment of two superintendents. Effective August 1, 2009, John Bowyer, currently Superintendent of Education/ Ajax Schools and School Community Councils, will be appointed to the role of Superintendent of Education/Whitby Schools and Safe Schools. Bowyer will replace retiring Superintendent Joe Hircock.
An educator for more than 25 years, Bowyer has held the roles of Principal of Henry Street High School in Whitby and has taught at both the secondary and elementary levels. More recently, Bowyer has led the DDSB’s School Community Councils and parent engagement initiatives and the Ajax family of schools.
The Durham District School Board is also pleased to announce the appointment of Janet Edwards to the position of Superintendent of Education/Ajax Schools and School Community Councils, effective August 1, 2009. Edwards is currently the Administrative Officer for the Whitby and the Brock, Scugog and Uxbridge Family of Schools.
An educator for more than 25 years, Edwards was the Principal of Henry Street High School from 2005-2007, and also held the roles of Vice Principal at Henry Street High School and Anderson Collegiate and Vocational Institute in Whitby. Edwards replaces Superintendent John Bowyer who has been appointed to the portfolio of Superintendent of Education/Whitby Schools and Safe Schools. The appointments are contingent upon confirmation by the Ministry of Education.

Director of Education, Martyn Beckett adds that, “The DDSB is pleased to welcome Janet Edwards to the role of Superintendent where her experience and commitment to public education will continue to be of benefit to our students.” Beckett further adds that, “John Bowyer’s considerable talents and commitment to partnership development with parents and with the community will benefit students in Whitby and throughout the DDSB.”
The Durham District School Board is responsible for public education in the rural settings of Uxbridge, Brock and Scugog Townships and the urban settings of Ajax, Whitby, Pickering and Oshawa. The board employs more than 7,000 teaching and educational services staff. With 137 elementary and secondary schools and learning centres, the Board accommodates more than 70,000 regular day students and thousands more who take advantage of a wide variety of continuing education and adult creditcourses.
