Celebrating 20 years of Montessori education in Oshawa & Whitby

Twenty years ago the founder of Rossland Montessori School introduced the Montessori style of education to the Oshawa/Whitby community. Mary Murray-Wardlaw has worked most of her life in the field of Education. She studied languages at McGill University and Music Education at Dalhousie University. She received her Associateship in Music from the Royal Conservatory of Music of Toronto and also attended Toronto Teacher's College. She has worked in the field of Montessori Education for 20 years and received her Casa Diploma from the North American Montessori Training Centre in Surrey, B.C., which is accredited with the International American Montessori Council. In 2003, she also received her Elementary Montessori Diploma from the Pan American Montessori Institute and in 2005, further studies awarded her a certificate from the Shelton School of Dallas, Texas for teaching "Children at Risk with Learning Differences". She has worked successfully with many such children as well as brought out the best in the gifted. Mrs. Murray-Wardlaw brings to the discipline not only obvious Montessori experience, but also a background rich in educational knowledge and teaching experience. She is credited with bringing the first Montessori programs to Oshawa and Whitby.

Mary Murray-Wardlaw, worked as music director and elementary teacher for the Rotherglen Montessori School formerly in Ajax, and then in 1988 opened her own School, the Focus Montessori School, that ran for 10 years. In 1997 she established a new school, the Rossland Montessori School at the Ritson/Rossland location in Oshawa. Over the years the school has established a name for its excellent standards, its caring atmosphere and its well-equipped classrooms, second to none.

Mrs. Murray-Wardlaw is an active member of the St. George's Church choir which recently toured England singing in many renowned cathedrals, a past board member of the Oshawa YWCA, she presently serves on the national executive of her charitable organization, IODE.

Rossland Montessori School is a registered private school with the Ontario Ministry of Education and at present includes a Pre-Toddler class for 12 to 22 months, a Toddler class for 22 month to three-year-olds, a Casa program for three to five year olds, and an elementary program for six- to 10-year-olds. In addition the school is a member of OFIS (Ontario Federation of Independent Schools) as well as an affiliate of CCMA (Canadian Council of Montessori Administrators) and IMC (International Montessori Council).
